A 42-wagon freight train hauled by Garratt locomotive No 47972, at Lickey Incline near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, March 1950. The Incline, over two miles long with a gradient of 1:37.7 is the steepest continuous section of track on any of Britain's main lines. The Garratt locomotive had been built for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway is assisted by another Garratt which had once served the London & North Eastern Railway. Along the Incline, the engines stalled and had to be rescued by a 0-10-0 banking engine, nicknamed 'Big Bertha'.
