Coaster 683 prepares to depart downtown San Diego's Santa Fe Depot. No. 3002 taking charge. The San Diego's Coaster commuter rail is the last Californian passenger railroad that continues to operate the F59 series of locomotives, let alone Amtrak California services in the northern half of the state. This engine and its sister 3001 were built and placed into service in 2001 and after 21 years of service they continue to roll on, however they are scheduled to be replaced next year by 4 Siemens SC-44 Charger engines, bringing the EMD era in California to an end.
