Resting in the yards towards the end of her career is Northern Pacific Z-6 class "Challenger" number 5106. The massive simple articulated 4-6-6-4 was built by the Schenectady plant of the American Locomotive Company, construction number 61766, in 1936. The class were delivered at an average cost of $183,588 each, and more than earned it back over the next two decades or so. Number 5106 was photographed at the roundhouse in Laurel, Montana on July 15, 1957. In less than a year, April of 1958, she would be retired and scrapped.
