Midland Railway 0-10-0 steam locomotive No. 2292 (58100) after its withdrawal from service in 1956. This unique locomotive, nicknamed "Big Bertha," was built in 1919 specifically for banking (assisting) trains up the steep Lickey Incline in Worcestershire, south of Birmingham, is the steepest sustained main-line railway incline in Great Britain. The climb is a gradient of 1 in 37.7 (2.65% or 26.5‰ or 1.52°) for a continuous distance of two miles (3.2 km). It was the only 0-10-0 locomotive ever built in mainland Britain. The locomotive is pictured at Derby Works before its eventual scrapping in May 1957.
