The experimantal APT-E high speed train on show at the Shildon branch of the National Railway Museum. The APT-E (Advanced Passenger Train Experimental), was the prototype tilting train unit. It was powered by gas turbines, the only multiple unit so powered used by British Rail. Built between 1970-1972, it was used for testing until 1976. A test carried out on the Great Western Main Line, saw it achieve a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached 152.3 mph between Swindon and Reading. It was only ever intended as a test train as part of the high speed tilting train technology development project. It is now on display at the Locomotion museum at Shildon, near Darlington.
