The GWR 1400 Class is a class of steam locomotive designed by the Great Western Railway for branch line passenger work. It was originally classified as the 4800 Class when introduced in 1932, and renumbered in 1946.

In the 1960s, the Norwood Junction locomotive depot, London, (shed code 75C) was a busy, but declining, British Railways site, still active with steam locomotives at the beginning of the decade before transitioning to diesel shunters and closing completely in 1966.

A total of 43 units have been built - 31 three-car units and 12 four-car units - at a cost of £500m.
